The Holidays are just around the corner and you know what that means.... it's pie time, baby. Every year we love when this season comes around and slows everything down. Things are baked longer, snuggles are held more deeply, and it seems like the world is echoing a collective deep breath as the cool air comes in. But did I mention the part about the pies yet? Because that may be our #1 favorite part about this time of the year. Every holiday season we love to bring old family heirloom recipes back to life (maybe remembering the people who first taught us how to make them..) and also try our hand at a few new inspiring recipes that help to shake us out of our "usual" pie ruts. So lately, we've been making some pies, and we thought we'd share some that we have been exceptionally fond of. Any of these would be great for your Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Meal, or any regular Monday through Sunday night.
1. The Blackberry + Ginger
The first pie we're sharing is a Blackberry and Ginger Pie. This pie is all sorts of fantastic because it hits the perfect balance of sweet yet also refreshing. I mean, did you miss the part about the blackberry and the ginger?! Can we get that combo in a smoothie? Maybe a face mask? Maybe an essential oil to start directly inhaling when we feel like we are going to explode at work on a Tuesday at 4:30pm because our boss just piled on a 2-hr task that has to get done ASAP but we bought tickets to Hamilton tonight. HAMILTON. Just seems like it might be relaxing... But uh, yeah, we really loved this unique take on a traditional berry pie from a cookbook we have been loving lately called The Pie Project. We switched up this recipe a bit, opting for some sifted powdered sugar on top instead of a traditional lattice crust. But it was un-be-lieveable. Serve on its own or a with a little scoop of that good old fashioned vanilla.
2. The Chocolate Lovers Nutella Pie
Hey You. Ya, You. The one reading this blogpost with her spoon directly in the Nutella jar. The Costco sized Nutella jar that you just opened on Monday and its already half way gone. Yeah, this pie is for you. You're Welcome. It's all sorts of chocolate-y, pie-y, hazelnut-y, dreamy and cloudlike and possibly made out of our literal hopes and dreams. Certainly this pie is what Heaven will be like. This pie perfection is also from our pie inspirers over at The Pie Project, and boy are we thanking them right now for this one. This is also the perfect recipe for your chocolate loving kiddo. (Ourselves???) All that this decadent tall, dark + handsome needs is a glass of cold milk.
3. Grandma's Famous Apple Pie
We've saved the best for last: Grandma's Famous apple pie recipe. This is a recipe I've been enjoying for as long as I can remember. Even when I was too young to really see over the counter-tops, I knew there was something special about this pie. The sweet smells that fill the house when you bake this apple pie are better than any festive holiday candle you could ever buy! It is pure love and sugar. And when Grandma makes her apple pie, we eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No joke. Maybe even elevensies. But I mean, by then, who's counting? This one has to be eaten hot with a hefty scoop of vanilla bean (don't be a french vanilla person, please, for all things good in this world) and next to a toasty fire. Seriously, its in Grandma's recipe. And nobody disregards Grandma.
Lastly, if you're serving these up for a holiday dessert table, don't forget to decorate with a little garland or greenery, and some varying levels!
