Yes, the bride is obviously making the biggest fashion statement at the wedding. But, there are still tons of important people who are going to be photographed as part of the wedding as well. It's key that you think about bringing everyone together in a cohesive way, whether its the bridal party or the mother of the bride or the flower girls, there are other looks to think about. But even more so, you will have these special, one-of-kind moments photographed for the rest of time. What should your dad be wearing during your dance? What should your mom wear to your wedding? Well, we're here to help you navigate the in's and out's of dressing allllll the folks who are extra special to you on your wedding day.
Okay, you've found your dream dress. Now comes the question, what does the groom wear? Does he need to wear a tux? First of all, there are a lot of awesome looks for grooms these days. The days of him being forced into wearing a tux are in the past. A tux is perfect for a formal black tie wedding. But if your wedding is literally anything else, then the groom doesn't have to wear a tux. A nice, fitted blue suit is super flattering on most. Or if its a summer wedding, maybe a crisp khaki suit or linen would be perfect. In fact, colors for the groom's suit are pretty dang cute too. Camel. Burgundy. Forrest green. We've even seen pink, and I'll tell ya, dudes can rock it. Either way, definitely put your guy in a suit. It's a special day. Whether you guys opt for a traditional tie, or a bow-tie, or no tie, it's all good. But a suit balances out well when he's standing next to you in a dress that is literally thousands of dollars.
Next up, the bridal party. When it comes to the bridal party, there are thousands of options. Of course, the most important thing is that the look is cohesive. If your event is black tie, your gals and dudes need to be up to par and exquisite. Otherwise, a floor length gown or cocktail length is a matter of choice. In our experience, floor length looks cleaner and more fitting for the special day. But if it's more of a backyard bash or laid-back summer BBQ, then a cocktail length would perfectly suit the occasion. Mother of the Bride / Groom
When it comes to the Mom's we always like to remind our couples of one thing... Yes sure, sometimes the mom relationships can be the toughest. Sometimes Mom gets a littleeee too obsessed with the whole wedding thing and tries to make your wedding into hers 2.0. BUT we just have to say, she did carry you in her literal stomach for 9 months and has permanent stretch marks because of you and also wiped actual s*** from your butt because you were physically incapable of doing anything for yourself for years. So, yeah, if your mom wants to wear something really nice. Let her. It's a big day for her too, and you literally wouldn't be here without her. Since mom's usually make an appearance walking down the aisle as part of the processional, we always love the idea of mom wearing a more formal floor length dress. But cocktail is fine too! Either way, she should stand out from the crowd a bit.
Father of the Bride / Groom
Okay, Dads. To all the dad's out there: today is the day to get out of the cargo shorts and car t-shirts. For your wedding day, you should encourage your Pops to wear a nice suit. Remind him of the Father-Daughter dance. You're going to have a lot of special photos with him, and how nice would it be to look back on photos and see him in the most dressed up and special you've ever seen him, especially as he walks you down the aisle. His outfit needs to be elevated enough to stand up and balance against your insanely beautiful wedding dress, so that he doesn't look like a total slob who didn't get the memo. Again, a tux is probably unnecessary, unless its a black tie wedding. And if he starts breaking it down on the dance floor, he can always rip off his jacket, roll up his sleeves, throw off his tie, and crack open a beer in classic Dad fashion.
Flower Girls / Ring Bearers
Flower girls need to be wearing the cutest summer wedding dresses imaginable for little girls. It's just a fact. What is cuter than a flower girl twirling around in a big skirt and flowers everywhere?! At the same time, a little cutie boy in a baby version of a man's suit is just out of this world adorable. But for little boys, even just a pair of pants and a button down shirt are "fancy" enough for a kid who will probably ruin his outfit by the end of the night. Instead of a suit, opt for a little neck tie and it'll feel formal enough!
Grandparents of the Bride / Groom
Okay, for the Grandparents it's a bit trickier. In most cases, the Grandparents walk down the aisle as well, if they are able. So of course you want them to look sharp. But the most important thing we always tell our clients is that the Grandparents are comfortable. Let them wear their comfortable sneakers. Pair it with a pantsuit and we think it's just perfect. You're lucky to have your Grandparents alive and able-bodied to celebrate such a monumental time in your life. In our experience, who cares what they wear. They are there. Enjoy it and celebrate with them while you can.
In general, there really aren't rules anymore. Just do you. But it always helps to keep in mind the venue (How formal is the space? Is it a beach where everyone is walking on sand, or an extremely grand ballroom where certain outfits might feel out of place?) as well as the vibe of your wedding (Are you going super bohemian or classic, timeless romantic?). Your venue + vibe are like the guiding posts for the rest of your decor and style choices. Keeping that in the forefront of your mind will always lead you to make a cohesive decision. Plus, we always like to air on the dressier side. We'll leave you with 2 last pieces of advice for why we we think it never hurts to lean on the dressier side 1) how many times do you get to dress up in your life and 2) a suit never goes out of style, but a certain cut of jeans or a trendy look definitely will.
