Ok so you finally figured out the whole matcha thing but what the f*** is spirulina?! Spirulina is basically algae and is a serious superfood with a vast array of concentrated nutrients! It is 70%+ protein, which makes this bad boy the world's highest known source of protein. (Did ya think protein only came from meat? That's right, think again.) It's also full of the beneficial fatty acid GLA, chlorophyll, iron, vitamin A, a full-spectrum of carotenoids, B1, B2, B6, E, and K just to name a few. Alright, that was a lot of science--have we lost ya? Here's the basics: spirulina supports eye health, energy levels, immune function, skin health and maintains healthy blood sugar levels. Talk about an amazing way to start the day! And when paired with matcha's high antioxidant benefits, which support heart health and has cancer fighting properties, HELLO why are we still drinking coffee for breakfast?! This matcha + spirulina latte is like a witch's potion for health and longevity AKA the fountain of youth!! Plus, its pretty, easy to make, energizing, tastes yummy, AND doesn't give ya the shakes and dehydration that coffee does. NEED WE SAY MORE?!
You can make this latte super easily using either a Vitamix or a hand-held milk frother. Either way, here's what you'll need...
- 1/2 tsp Matcha
- 1/2 tsp Spirulina
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 10 oz non-dairy milk (almond froths the best in our opinion, but coconut, flax, or hemp milk would also work well!)
- 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of agave depending on how sweet you like your lattes (honey, or coconut sugar also works great here!)
Okay... but dude, where do you buy matcha and spirulina, you ask? Not to worry, you can buy matcha at almost any health foods store or you can order it online at many places. A great place to start with matcha is this one online. For spirulina, we love the Spirulina Manna brand which again, you can find at most health foods stores, or order online at Amazon here. It also isn't a matcha latte if it isn't in a super cute ceramic mug... We are obsessed with ours from Hanselman Pottery.
Method 1 - Vitamix
Pour all ingredients in your Vitamix. Milk can be cold and coconut oil can be hard. Slowly bring it up to high on the blender, and blend on high for 5 mins. You should see steam releasing from the top of the Vitamix. Just the friction heats up your latte! Lastly, pour and enjoy!
Method 2 - Hand-held Frother
If you don't have a Vitamix, a hand-held milk frother will do as well. Simply heat up your milk first. Then put all ingredients into a mug and allow extra room for it to stir. Insert the frother into the mug and froth until all the powders have blended. Enjoy!
Super simple. Creamy. Earthy. And out of this world good for you. Would you make this latte at home? If you do, tag us so we can see! We're addicted and would love to see how you make this!
