It's a question that gets thrown around lot in the bridal world... Are you going to do a first look or wait until you walk down the aisle for him to see you? Now, don't get us wrong, while we, like Katherine Heigl, love a good moment walking down the aisle and seeing the groom's face light up (thank you 27 Dresses) we also have a special place in our heart for a first look. Let us tell you why it may or may not be one of our favorite parts of the day...
Listen. Your wedding day is going to be the best day of your life, yes, buuuuuut it's also going to come with its own very special bag of pressures and stress. It's not everyday you get married. For most, it's not every day that you are in the spotlight with hundreds of eyes watching your every move and glance and potential trip. Let's face it, it's a lot of pressure. And weird af. With all the stress and anxiety that bubbles up the morning leading up to your walk down the aisle (trust us, everyone gets nervous) sometimes you just need to see your best friend -- the one person who knows how to calm you down.
Jumping off that, it's so much more intimate to see your person one-on-one instead of waiting to see him in front of everybody you know in this world watching you and him and every blink you might make walking down the aisle. This day is about you and him. Doing a first look allows you to center and remember -- what is this day about anyway? Its not about everyone else sitting out there. It's about your love and your commitment. A first look is often the only time all day that you and your HUSBAND will have the chance to be "alone" (other than a photographer) and say to each other whatever you want to say without the world weighing in. It's so beautiful and special. Also, many dudes lose it in a first look since they can be authentic and vulnerable with their best friend instead of feeling the pressure of everyone's eyes on them. But again, doing a first look reminds you: this is about what you have to say to him. This is YOUR future together -- don't let anything or anyone let you forget that. In fact, sometimes it takes having that moment together just you two to remember that.
ANOTHER SPECIAL PHOTO OP
Lastly, doing a first look allows you to the opportunity to get special photos and moments captured for ever that you otherwise might not have. Allowing plenty of time for him to see you and absorb and feel the moment without thinking about what he has to say up on the alter etc. etc. allows you two to really live that moment. Listen, if you love 27 Dresses as much as we do and live for that moment when the groom first sees the bride, then it only follows that you would LOVE a first look because it allows him to experience it so much longer, for the photographer to actually catch his reaction when he sees you (because, hello, otherwise they are trying to capture YOU walk down the aisle at the same time which is kind of a big deal ok so its tough). Not only do you get time to see his reaction, but you get the most special and intimate of photos taken as well. Tears streaming down your face. Love at its purest. OK you get it, we love a first look.
It's true, we really are crazy about a first look. We just don't know how you can beat the most intimate and vulnerable and authentic moment out of the entire day. In most cases, this is where we cry for the first time in the day as the planner, and is often where our favorite photos come from. So if you're thinking about doing a first look, all we can say is HELL YES! Do it.
